Sunrise Beach is where Koh Lipe wakes first, and the whole show takes less than an hour. From the sand in front of Wapi Resort you get first light over the Andaman Sea, longtail boats heading out for the day and water calm enough for a swim before breakfast.

Before the island wakes

This is the quietest hour on Koh Lipe. Walking Street is still asleep, the sand is cool under your feet, and the first swimmers have the water almost to themselves. From a beachfront bungalow it takes seconds to reach the shore, sit down and simply wait.

The best part of a Koh Lipe morning is not the photograph. It is the few minutes when nothing happens at all.

The light changes fast here. One minute the sky is deep blue, the next it runs pink and gold, and the longtails moored off the beach turn into dark silhouettes against it. Guests often reach for a camera, take one frame, then put it down again and watch the rest with their own eyes.

An early swim

Those early hours are also the best time to be in the water. The sea off Sunrise Beach is usually at its calmest before the wind picks up, and the small islands of Koh Usen and Koh Kra sit close on the horizon. Our team can check the conditions with you, lend you snorkelling equipment or arrange a longtail boat with a local Chao Ley boatman we know and trust.

Breakfast by the sea

Back at the resort, breakfast runs from 7:30 to 10:00 at Wapi Restaurant, right beside the water. Tropical fruit, eggs, toast, yoghurt and Thai favourites such as rice soup come with fresh coffee, and the sea sits just beyond the tables. There is no hurry. Nobody is expecting you anywhere.

The rest of the morning

After breakfast the garden takes over. The bungalows among the trees hold the shade through the warmest part of the day, and their covered verandas are made for a slow second coffee; our piece on mornings in the garden bungalows explains why guests who choose them rarely switch. If you would rather keep the water close, the beachfront and sea-view rooms do exactly that.

Morning is when Koh Lipe feels most like itself: gentle light, a sleepy island, and nowhere else you need to be. We look forward to sharing another Andaman sunrise with you.
